Another mystery

This is actually from last year but wow was it a freak out when I saw these begin to appear next to the pond! I thought of it because of the excessive rain we have been having (did I mention the RAIN here in New England! Almost every day! All summer! What gives! & thunder & lightening too!) I thought there might be a multi-tentacled monster living under the rock in my back yard (despite my careful scientific training I have an overactive imagination) but my next door neighbor, who is very rational (block captain when disaster hits, no question!) identified it as a mushroom. Well, that is what I really thought all along, in truth, but I preferred to imagine that I had a monster growing under my garden.

Those are stinkpot mushrooms. They have a terrible rotting flesh smell that attracts flies. Very freaky looking! And watch out because they spread.
