This is my niece trying to hand feed the fish in the lower pond. It wasn't exactly successful, since they didn't actually take the food from her hand, but then they didn't swim off in the other direction when they saw her hand either. In fact, they swam towards her when they got the idea that she might be dispersing fish food. So I have hope that they could be trained to hand feed. I think it would be less dangerous than hand feeding monkeys in the Peruvian jungle, say, as far as the risk of contracting nasty parasites goes. In fact I hope the risk of nasty parasites around here is low, since I have a lot of contact with the pond water. One of my friends just got giardia from a pond in southern New Hampshire (not sure which one) but that was a lot better than the original diagnosis. Another friend thought he had giardia and it turned out to be something much worse. At any rate, it would be fun to train the fish to hand feed. The orange and white one right under her hand is the biggest fish I have, probably twice as big as most of the others, I should really name it since it is one of the few fish I can distinguish, but somehow inspiration escapes me when it comes to naming fish. Speaking of escaping (or disappearing) that reminds me of ANOTHER pond related mystery, do stay tuned to hear all about it ...
