Lily pads

Yes, it's true what they say, frogs really do like to sit on lily pads. As I mentioned earlier, I got all of my lily pads out of ponds in New Hampshire. This often involved wading up to my thighs in deep black muck, and although I'm reasonably brave, my irrational fear of swamp monsters and leeches was hard to overcome. I have two varieties of lily pads in the pond at the moment, one which produces big yellow flowers and one with smaller white flowers with a yellow center. The lily pads proved to be surprisingly easy to transplant ... I just dug up the tubers with some leaves attached, stuck it in the rocks and muck at the bottom of my pond, and within a week they were growing new leaves. However, I have not had luck getting them to flower. Last year, due to leakage, I was unable to maintain pond water levels at higher than about 3 inches over the winter months. This was fine with Frogger, but the lily pads are not as resistant to freezing and I had to bring in a new crop this spring. Who wouldda thunk, a frog can freeze but a water plant tuber can't. Hopefully next year I will keep enough water in the pond over winter to protect the lily pad tubers and then perhaps they will flower next summer.
